How does Bookspine recommend books?

Your favourite books, preferred categories and reading list shape your recommendations. Bookspine looks for shared categories and authors, then mixes in different voices. Each recommendation includes a short reason to help you choose.

Finished doesn’t automatically mean loved. Dropping a book keeps it out of recommendations without ruling out its whole category. There are no star ratings or custom tags.

Set up your reading taste whenever you like. You can browse the public catalogue without completing a setup or creating an account.

What can I keep on my shelves?

Use Read later, Currently reading, Finished or Dropped to track a book’s place in your reading life. Wishlist is separate: a book you want to acquire can also be on your Read later shelf. Mark favourites to tell Bookspine what you love.

Your preferences and shelves are saved in this browser on this device. They do not automatically sync between devices. Relevant preferences and shelf signals are sent to the catalogue service when it calculates recommendations.

Where do the books and reading lists come from?

The catalogue brings together more than ten thousand well-loved books with people’s recommendations, Top 100 collections, reading lists and series. It is a starting point, not a complete record of every published book.

Book covers and additional title lookup use Open Library. Editions and cover availability can vary.

Where should I start?

Browse the Top 100 collections, follow a reader’s recommendations, or choose a category you’re curious about. Your next great read might be a little outside your usual shelf.
